What is total hip replacement surgery?

Total hip replacement surgery replaces a damaged or diseased hip joint with a plastic or metal prosthesis. It’s a safe and effective procedure that relieves pain and stiffness so you can return to your favorite activities.

Who should consider a total hip replacement?

Consider a total hip replacement at NeuroSpine Center of Wisconsin if you have chronic hip pain that affects your mobility or quality of life. That’s especially true if you’ve been diagnosed with:

  • Osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Posttraumatic arthritis
  • Osteonecrosis (a condition that limits blood supply to the hip joint)

Sometimes, the team recommends total hip replacement to people with hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is a congenital abnormality that affects how the ball of the hip joint fits into the socket.

What does total hip replacement involve?

Total hip replacement surgery is an outpatient procedure that takes 1-2 hours. Before your operation, your NeuroSpine Center of Wisconsin provider administers general anesthesia, making you fall asleep.

After the anesthesia sets in, your provider makes several small incisions near your hip joint. Then, they use surgical tools to remove the diseased or damaged portion of your hip and replace it with metal or plastic pieces.

Your provider uses screws or cement to hold your new hip joint in the proper position. Then, they close the incisions and move you to a recovery room for observation. You can’t drive for about a month after hip replacement, so a friend or family member must drive you home after the procedure.

What is recovery like after total hip replacement?

After total hip replacement, it’s normal to experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort. During the first few days of recovery, get plenty of rest, take your medications as prescribed, and keep your incision sites clean.

Most people return to their regular routines within 3-6 weeks.* However, you may need to walk with a cane or crutches at first.

Once you’re back on your feet, your NeuroSpine Center of Wisconsin provider refers you to a physical therapist. Physical therapy uses stretches, strengthening exercises, and manual therapies, like massage, to speed healing and recovery.
